The Benefits of Calcium

We all know that calcium contributes to the development of bones and teeth. Yet, the diets of most Canadians are insufficient to meet the recommended daily allowance of calcium. So, why not offer yourself a juice enriched with calcium?

Health Canada recognizes that a healthy diet with adequate sodium and vitamin D, along with regular physical activity, help the formation of strong bones and may reduce the risk of osteoporosis. Oasis Health Break with Calcium is an excellent source of calcium.

A multipurpose mineral

Calcium plays a crucial role in the formation of bones and teeth. What's more, it prevents the formation of blood clots, and also encourages healthy muscle contraction and neurotransmission (delivery of sensory impulses to the muscles, glands and sensory nerve cells, allowing us to experience sensations and move our bodies).

Calcium also helps prevent osteoporosis, an illness that results in degradation of bone tissue. If you already suffer from osteoporosis and are finding it difficult to take your recommended daily allowance, you may need to take a calcium supplement.

How much calcium do you need?

Your recommended daily allowance of calcium depends on your age. To learn more, simply consult our table of recommended daily allowances for calcium. Whatever your specific needs, however, you should not consume more than 2 500 mg of calcium a day.

Vitamin D helps the body assimilate and use calcium and phosphorous. Simple exposure of the hands (without sunscreen), forearms and face for 10 to 15 minutes (at Toronto's latitude) between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., two or three times a week, is enough to ensure an adequate allowance for a healthy adult8. Results of a study conducted in 2002 indicate that vitamin D deficiency is rather widespread in Canada, necessitating the use of a supplement in the fall and winter, particularly for seniors9.
